Welcome to Faculty of Science, Egerton University. We offer quality courses in basic and applied science for our own science students and also service courses to other faculties in the University. We have six departments namely; Biochemistry and molecular biology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer science, Mathematics and Physics. Currently, we offer 17 undergraduate and 15 graduate programs.

You are the reason we exist, and that is why we go an extra mile and do our very best to offer you quality products and services.As a Faculty, we focus on holistic transformation of our students with special attention to academic excellence, skill acquisition and change in attitude. Our undergraduate programs in computer science, applied computer science, actuarial science, statistics, biochemistry, biomedical science and technology, applied aquatic science and science provide students with the strong knowledge base and stimulating practical learning necessary to prepare them for a dynamic job market in public and private sector, industry , local and international.

Our graduate programs introduce students to theory and practice in fields where the application not only lead to successful scientific and professional careers but more appetite for curiosity, creativity and continuous education.

About Faculty of Science

The Faculty of science is as old as Egerton University as an institution of higher learning. Basic science courses namely chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology and mathematics were offered to diploma courses since the establishment of the Egerton college as an institution of higher learning in 1950s. In 1986, when Egerton college was elevated to a University college status and various programmes in agricultural science were introduced it was realized that there is need to describe courses to strengthen these programmes in basic science and more courses were introduced as pre-requisites.This lead to the creation of the Faculty in 1987 when Egerton University was given a full University status. The primary role of the Faculty was to provide appropriate facilities for the advancement of basic scientific knowledge to students and scholars within the Faculty and to other Faculties. The first Bachelor of Science students majoring in Basic Sciences were admitted for the 1987/88 Academic Year. During this time there were two departments namely Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences. Science students pursued Bachelor of Science programme leading to specialization in Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics and Computer science under the 3.2.2. options. The Faculty also offered service courses to other Faculties mainly Education and Agriculture.

With a rich history of excellence in education, training, research, and service, we take pride in being among the pioneer trainers of professional biochemists in East Africa.

At our department, we offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Biomedical Science and Technology courses.

Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences is one of oldest departments in the University having been started in 1952 when Egerton College introduced formal diploma courses. The Department was started to offer basic life science courses that supported the professional diploma courses which were started at different periods viz. Agriculture (1952), Animal husbandry (1962), Dairy technology and Forestry (1963) Range Management (1965), Agricultural Education and Extension (1966), Farm Management (1969), Food Science and Technology (1967), Agriculture and Home Economics (1970), Horticulture and Animal Health (1978)

Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science was established in 1990 in the faculty of science and it is among the first departments in Kenya to offer a BSc Degree in computer science. with the objective of imparting quality education in the domain of Computer Science and Applications. With rapidly evolving technology and the continuous need for innovation, the department has always produced quality professionals, holding important positions in leading Information Technology Industries in Kenya and abroad.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is housed in the Physical Sciences Complex, Njoro Main campus of Egerton University. The Department now has two undergraduate degree programs namely Bachelor of Science (Statistics) and Bachelor of Science (Actuarial Sciences). The Department continues to service most other programs, in particular the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Education (Arts), and Engineering programs just to mention a few. Further, the Department offers specialized training in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science.

Department Of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry has qualified academic and technical staff that carry out high quality teaching and research.The staff are involved in research that is aimed at contributing to Kenya vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The department continues to be in a period of rapid growth in student and teaching facilities.The objectives of the Department are to provide a conducive training environment for undergraduate and post graduate students. It hosts an ultra-modern physical sciences block with some state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research.

Department of Physics

Since its inception, the department of physics has grown into a strong unit occupying an ultra-modern building in the Physical Sciences Complex. Its well-equipped basic and research laboratories and a dedicated team of highly qualified technical and academic staff enables it to offer quality education and training to an increasing number of students of Physics and of other departments in the university. Our undergraduate Physics students undergo a unique and vibrant industrial attachment programme, which allows them to apply acquired knowledge and skills and connects them to the world of work and potential employers.
