About Faculty of Arts and Social Studies

The faculty offers over thirty certificate, diploma and degree programmes. The programmes are designed meet local and global challenges and well support the realization of vision 2030.Among recent masters degree programmes introduced are Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Master of Arts in Security Management. 

The programmes are run by more than fifty highly qualified and experienced academic staff. The Faculty comprises of four departments namely: Department of Economics; Department of Languages, Literature and Linguistics; Department of Peace Security and Social Studies and; Department of Philosophy, History and Religion.

 The skills that the Department of Literature, Languages, and Linguistics instills in the students through its courses are in high demand in the marketplace.  The economies of Africa are becoming increasingly sophisticated as the continent modernizes, as a result of which there is a steady demand for personnel who possess the ability to think critically through complex issues, to communicate well, to undertake research, to produce well-reasoned written documents, and, in general, to work collaboratively with colleagues toward common objectives within the context of corporations and institutions.

The Department of Economics of Egerton University, formally established in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 1994, has the prime mission of training and equipping students with basic to advanced knowledge in all aspects of economics.  This is aimed at providing students with a clear understanding of economic theory as it is taught worldwide.  Students intending to pursue postgraduate work at Masters and Doctoral levels are well equipped to do so at the end of our Bachelors Programs.
