Infrastructural Development & Professional Standards

Under the economic and social pillars in Kenya’s vision 2030 there are key flagship projects that must be undertaken to achieve the targeted objectives. The flagship projects are majorly infrastructural projects. These projects require skilled manpower. The Civil Engineering programme lays a heavy emphasis on the practical application of knowledge in design, construction maintenance and management of physical and built environment. The course profile provides sufficient core elements of Civil Engineering education for the graduate to gain recognition and acceptance by professional bodies such as Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).

Career Paths & Professional Services

Upon completion of the program the graduates will offer services in the different civil engineering sectors such as roads and bridges; Building and structures; public health & sanitation as well environmental management of engineering works.

Entry Requirements & Criteria

A candidate who wishes to be admitted into the program must have the minimum University entry requirements as follows:

For Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) a mean aggregate of at least grade C+ (plus) and individual cluster subjects scores given below:

  • For Higher National Diploma holders, a candidate must be a holder of Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), or an equivalent Higher National Diploma from any other examining body reorganized by the University Senate.
  • For ordinary Diploma holders, a candidate must be a holder of a KNEC Diploma in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent Diploma from any other examining body recognized by the University Senate.

Credit Transfers

Accumulation & Policy Guidelines

Regulations on credit accumulation, including possible pathways, shall be in line with the provisions of Universities Regulations, Universities Standards and Guidelines, and general national trends.

Normal credit transfer will not exceed 40% of the programme total Credit Factors as stipulated in the Egerton University Statutes 37(3) of 2023.

Examinations & Grading Framework

Examination Rules

Examination regulations for the program shall be conducted in accordance with Egerton University Statute 37(7) of 2023. Examinations shall be held at the end of each semester of each year of study in accordance with the university examination regulations, with the exception of the following practical courses that shall be examined by oral presentations, assessments and submission of drafts and reports: CIEN 260: Engineering Practice CIEN 360: Industrial Attachment CIEN 460: Industrial Practice CIEN 561: Engineering Project: Proposal Development CIEN 562: Engineering Project: Implementation

Grading System

The grading of examination for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with Egerton University Statues 37 (8) (e)(i) (f), of 2023.

Graduation Baseline

To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass at least 150.5 CFs which, at least 9 CFs will be University Common Core Courses within the stipulated period in accordance with Egerton University Statute 37 (6) (a) (b) (c), of 2023.
