Subsector Potential & Technology Reviews

Livestock production is a fast-growing and major subsector of the agricultural industry in Kenya. Its contribution toward both small-scale and large-scale farm incomes, employment, foreign exchange earnings, and national food security cannot be overemphasized. However, the full potential of this subsector is yet to be realized, creating an urgent industry demand for a highly qualified workforce.

Needs Assessment: Initially established prior to formal accreditation, this ongoing programme underwent a comprehensive review and needs assessment cycle to integrate contemporary changes in agricultural technology.

Programme Objective

Competencies & Enterprise Development

The primary objective of the programme is to prepare learners to acquire advanced scientific knowledge, technical skills, positive professional attitudes, and operational competencies required for the modern management, scientific advisory, technological innovation, and enterprise development of global livestock production networks.

Admission Requirements

Entry Pathways & Prerequisites

Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry guidelines stipulated by Egerton University. Track-specific requirements include:

  • Secondary Track (KCSE): Mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent, with at least a C+ in English or Kiswahili, and a minimum grade of C in Mathematics or Physics, Biology or Agriculture, and Chemistry.
  • Diploma Track: At least a Credit pass in Animal Science, Animal Health, Agriculture, Range Management, or closely related disciplines from recognized institutions. (Pass-level Diploma holders require a minimum of two years of relevant professional working experience).
  • Advanced Track (A-Level): A certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and one subsidiary pass in relevant secondary subjects.

Duration: 4 Academic Years

The Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Technology program is structured for a four-year duration under a full-time study framework. Curricular paths are divided into semesters comprising standard instructional teaching weeks alongside intensive final assessment weeks.

Academic Regulations

Testing, Grading & Classifications

All operations, assessments, and grading scales are governed strictly by the common academic regulations of Egerton University:

  • Grading System: Evaluated out of 100% per unit, consisting of Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs), laboratory assignments, and written end-of-semester examinations.
  • Pass Mark: The minimum pass threshold score for any prescribed unit is 40%.
  • Graduation Requirements: Candidates must register, complete, and pass all required core units, elective coursework, and field attachments to be considered for degree classification.
