Founded in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, Egerton University is Kenya’s oldest institution of higher learning. Originally established as a farm school, it evolved into a premier agricultural college before being chartered as a full university in 1987. Today, headquartered at the Njoro Main Campus, Egerton is a hub of academic excellence housing diverse faculties ranging from Agriculture and Engineering to Science and Veterinary Medicine

Egerton University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Kenya. It was founded as a Farm School in 1939 by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton, a British national who settled in Kenya in the 1920s.
Guided by the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012, Egerton University is mandated to serve as a premier hub for the generation, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge through high-level research, training, and community outreach.
Egerton University has officially launched its 4th Strategic Plan (2023–2027), setting a new trajectory to guide the institution over the next five years.The event was led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage at the Njoro Main Campus and attended by members of the University Council, University Management Board, Senate, and staff, underscoring a united front in steering the University into the future
